This is the panel's built-in file manager and the code behind every Browse button in the interface. It ships as Django views under /files/ rather than as action-API methods, and covers listing, reading and saving files, creating, renaming, copying, moving and deleting entries, uploading and downloading, compressing and extracting archives, file info, and chmod/chown.

It tries each operation in-process first and falls back to the root agent when the path is root-owned or otherwise unreadable by the panel user, which is what lets it work inside tenant homes and system directories that the in-process manager cannot touch. Paths are handled differently per role: an administrator sees and types real absolute paths, while a non-admin's paths are mapped to and from their own home directory, so a tenant cannot address anything outside it, and a blocklist rejects sensitive locations regardless. Deletion moves the item into the user's recycle bin along with a metadata record of where it came from, so restore puts it back at its original location; clearing the bin is permanent.

Picker mode at /files/picker/ renders the same browser as a chooser and answers with the real absolute path, which is how path fields elsewhere in the panel get their Browse button. Dotfiles are hidden by default with a toolbar toggle, and the folder stats say how many entries are being hidden so nothing disappears without explanation. Downloads of files the panel cannot read directly are staged through the agent before being streamed, and the temporary copy is removed afterwards.
